What Maximizing Progress Looks Like

It takes the average student around 20 hours to become proficient in the beginner level of Rumba. Ideally about 80-85% of time should be spent on practice while 15-20% of time spent on receiving and applying feedback.

In-Person Lessons

Practice: 14-18 hours (most students take one lesson per week and rarely practice outside of lessons)

Feedback: 4-7 hours (interwoven with teaching syllabus)

Total Time: 10 Weeks to reach 20 hours of practice and feedback.

On-Demand Videos

Practice: 30-35 hours (due to the absence of feedback, students often need more practice to correct mistakes on their own)

Feedback: 0 hours

Total Time: 7 Weeks to reach 35 hours of practice (lack of feedback)

Hybrid Approach

Practice: 16-17 hours (students can practice daily with access to syllabus)

Feedback: 3-4 hours (students can get focused feedback on technique and how to improve)

Total Time: 3 Weeks to reach 20 hours of practice and feedback.

*these estimates are based on averages, and the exact time needed can vary depending on individual learning styles and needs.

Figures And Routines

Our Figures & Routines, based on the ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing) syllabus, provide clear step-by-step instructions from beginner to advanced levels. This ensures you’re learning correct techniques right from the start.

Studies show that people forget up to 50% of new information within an hour of learning it, and up to 70% within 24 hours.

Unlike traditional lessons limited by instructor availability, our online curriculum offers unlimited access, allowing you to learn at your own pace and have better retention.

Technique Videos

While anyone can learn to dance a figure or routine, what truly separates a beginner from a world champion is their mastery of technique.

Our Technique Videos dive deep into the details of ballroom dance, breaking down body positioning, footwork, foot positions, timing and more.

Unlike traditional lessons, where time is divided between syllabus and technique, our Technique Videos are focused solely helping students perform with precision and grace.

Personalized Feedback

After submitting a video of your dance, students receive detailed, individualized feedback from certified instructors that highlight areas for improvement, and offers specific advice tailored to your skill level.

Studies have shown that learners who can review feedback multiple times are more likely to retain and apply it effectively, leading to sustained improvement in skills over time.

Unlike real-time feedback in traditional lessons that might be forgotten, students can review the recorded feedback as much as they want.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need access to a dance studio to practice?

The simple answer is no. We intentionally created this hybrid approach so you can practice more frequently without the inconveniences of traveling to a studio and pay studio fees.

Albeit you'll be on dance floors during a night out, most of the time spent practicing can be done at home.

What's the best way to practice at home?

The ideal environment would be an open area with hardwood flooring or ceramic floors. This makes it easier for any twisting or turning movements that may otherwise be difficult if it were on carpet flooring.

Having a full length mirror to practice in front of will also be beneficial to see if you are doing the movements correctly. Make sure that the mirror is secure and that you are not practicing too close to it in case of accidental injuries.

How does the personalized video analysis work?

Students will be able to record themselves with a cellphone or camcorder (once facing the camera, and a second time from the side) and submit this to our team of instructors.

From there, the instructor will review the video recording, analyzing it and providing detailed feedback with annotations in video format and submit it back to the student.

The student can then review the feedback as many times as they want.

Do I need a dance partner to learn?

Students will be able to learn more effectively if they have a partner to practice with although it is not required to start off with.

Ultimately ballroom dance is done with a partner but students will still need to learn each step and practice the technique.

Students who don't have a partner to practice with can find a partner later on as they get more familiar with the steps and technique first.

Meet Your Instructor

Jinmin Shen

Over my 40+ year ballroom dance career, I've taken many beginners to go on and win first place in championship levels.

However, it saddened me to see the countless students who had potential as well but didn't learn and practice as much due to obstacles like time and availability to name a few.

So I put together a team and developed this hybrid approach that gives students the flexibility to learn at their own pace while still getting feedback from a certified instructor.

In-person lessons are fantastic for learning ballroom except over my decades of teaching, it's rare for students to learn and practice more than once a week.

On top of this, many instructors who taught at the studio weren't actually certified teachers which can lead to building bad habits.

On the other hand, online tutorials were usually all over the place let alone being detailed unless it was a paid subscription platform - even then both online solutions lacked the crucial personal feedback aspect.

As a result, we developed this hybrid approach to work with today's technology and modern lifestyles.

By giving students the ability to practice more frequently, to proper syllabus, and receiving credible feedback...

I envision even more people will be able to enjoy the beauty of ballroom dance by removing the obstacles that once turned many of them away.

I'll see you inside the academy,

Jinmin Shen
